RICHMOND, Va. — April 28, 2025 — Virginians can apply for a REAL ID at any full-service Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) location at any time of year, the agency announced Apr. 25.
REAL ID enforcement begins May 7, 2025. After that date, travelers using a state-issued ID to board domestic flights or enter secure federal facilities must present either a REAL ID or another federally accepted form of identification, such as a U.S. passport.
The DMV said residents should plan ahead to avoid delays, especially if they expect to travel close to the enforcement date. Customers can start the application process online, schedule an appointment at their local DMV office, and must bring the required documents to verify identity, residency, and legal presence.

A REAL ID costs an additional $10 on top of the standard driver’s license or identification card fee. Customers whose names have changed must also present documentation such as a marriage certificate or court order.
REAL ID is optional for those who have a valid passport or another form of federally approved identification.
