SHENANDOAH COUNTY, VA — Aerial treatment to combat spongy moth infestations is set to begin in Shenandoah County on or about April 24, according to a public notice from county officials.

The spraying operation will involve low-flying helicopters applying treatment over private wooded land, as well as state and federally owned forested areas throughout the county. The treatment aims to protect trees — particularly hardwoods — from damage caused by the invasive spongy moth, formerly known as the gypsy moth.

Ground support vehicles marked “Summit Helicopters” will be used during the operation and may be staged near state roads. They will be accompanied by county, state, and federal personnel.

Officials did not specify the exact duration of the operation, which will depend on weather and site conditions.
